Portland - William "Bill" Henry Betters III, 68, passed away unexpectedly on May 10, 2017. Bill was born in Manchester, NH on May 13, 1948, the son of Barbara (Moore) and William Henry Betters II.

Bill spent much of his childhood traveling the United States and spent his earliest years in Germany where his father was with the U.S. Army. His family made their way to Maine where Bill graduated from Gorham High School with the class of 1966. Bill joined the U.S. Army and served in the Military Police Corps. He found himself in the heart of the Baltimore Riots in 1968, following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. After leaving the Army, Bill put his Military Police experience to work and joined the Portland Police Department, where he served for many years. Bill then became part of the SWAT team in York County and an Officer with the Wells Police Department where he served until his retirement as a Sergeant.

Bill was currently working as the facility manager at Immucell but he never stopped being a cop. His oath to serve and protect was his life's mission. He was an old school "cop's cop". He went by the book; some would say he wrote the book! He served as a mentor to many and the lessons he passed on continue to be passed on to new generations of Maine Police Officers.

Those that knew the real Bill knew that behind his stoic demeanor he was a kind, humorous and generous man who worked quietly behind the scenes for his friends and family. He was a voracious reader, he loved shooting, golfing, riding his Harley, and most importantly, being a proud Dad of his four children.

Bill is survived by his four children, William Henry Betters IV and his partner Melissa Adams of Saco, Patrick Betters and his wife April of Biddeford, Danielle Dubay-Betters and fiancé Christopher Goodwin of Wells, and Gabrielle Betters of Wells; his grandchildren, William Henry Betters V and Bailey "Punky" Betters; a brother, Brian Betters and his wife Kim of Davidson, NC; his "better half" Jodelle Austin, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Mark and Rick Betters.

Friends may call Monday, May 15, 2017 from 4-8 P.M. at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland, ME 04103. A private celebration of Bill's life will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11 A.M. at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to honor Bill's longtime membership and commitment to the Maine Police Emerald Society P.O. Box 1445, Scarborough, ME 04070-1445 , The Fortune Society fortunesociety.org or a charity of one's choice.
