FALMOUTH - Josephine Elizabeth Burton (Jo), formerly of 315 Deering Avenue, Portland, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2016 at Sedgewood Commons, a specialized memory support community, where she had resided for two years. Jo was born in Portland on July 19, 1931, the daughter of Edward Francis and Catherine Mulkern Greeley. She attended Portland Schools and graduated from Portland High School.

Upon graduation, she began a 20-year career with The New England Telephone and Telegraph Company. She retired and in 1973, began her second career with the City of Portland. She spent 12 years in the City's Public Health Department before becoming the Principal Administrative Officer of the Portland Fire Department in 1985, a position she held until her retirement from the City in 2000 after 27 total years of service. She was a long time communicant of St. Dominic's Church and later St. Patrick's Church.

Retirement allowed Jo to enjoy more time with friends, often travelling with them to parts of the United States and throughout Europe; and with family, particularly spending countless hours playing with, watching and loving her eight grandchildren.

She is survived by her two sons, Timothy Edward Burton of Odessa, Texas, his wife Alison Burton, and their children Timothy, Barbara and Joseph; David Burton of Falmouth, his wife Andrea Burton, and their children Ashleigh, Nicholas, Jessica, Victoria and Alexandra, and her two nephews, Martin Ridge of Yarmouth and Robert Ridge of South Portland. She was predeceased by her former spouse Rodney Burton, her brother Martin Greely and her sister Catherine Ridge.

The Burton family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Sedgewood Commons, especially those in the Longfellow Wing, for the loving and wonderful care they provided to Jo, and to the staff at Compassus whose efforts and support were invaluable.

Visiting hours are Tuesday, Nov. 29 from 4 pm to 6 pm at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A private, family burial will be held Wed, Nov. 30 at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and cards, donations can be made to the Josephine and John Marr Alzheimer's Research Fund at: http://give.brighamandwomens.org/marr-fund-events/.
