Joan Wishman McGorrill, 88, of Falmouth Foreside, died on September 11, 2017. Joan was born in Lewiston on November 6, 1928, the daughter of Harry W. Wishman, Jr. and Hazel M. Stanley.

A lifelong resident of the greater Portland area, Joan was an avid gardener, prolific knitter, enthusiastic community volunteer and doting grandmother. She brought a wonderful sense of humor, passionate energy, and a knack for leadership to all her endeavors.

She attended Cumberland schools before moving to Falmouth Foreside with her mother and step-father, William J. Hill. Joan attended high school at the Howard Seminary in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts where she was elected Senior Class President and awarded the School Spirit Medal, graduating in 1946. She attended the University of Maine at Orono before marrying John M. McGorrill, also from Falmouth, on August 1, 1948.

They raised their family in Portland, enjoying summers at their camp on Sebago Lake. A highlight of their later years were annual winter escapes to Bonita Springs, Florida, shared with "snowbirding" Bowdoin and Portland friends. Joan's clever wit was perhaps most evidenced by her institution of marking momentous family occasions with a most humorous and cleverly rhyming "ditty" - irreverently characterizing the honoree.

Joan gave many years of volunteer service in the Portland area in both supporting and leadership roles. She was a long time member of the Junior League of Portland, serving as Treasurer and Vice-President. She was the first President of the Portland Chamber of Commerce Wives. Joan was on the Board of the Portland YWCA and also served as their Finance Director. Her major volunteer commitment was to the Maine Medical Center, beginning as a Junior Volunteer in high school. She was the recipient of the Medical Center's "Bettsanne Holmes Service Award" in 2002 and served on the Medical Center's Board of Corporators for over 35 years. She and her husband were long time members of the State Street Church, serving on various committees.

Joan leaves her three daughters Judith Coburn ( husband Andrew ) of Yarmouth; Sally Noteware ( husband Gary ) of Brookline, Massachusetts; Linda Suitor ( husband David ) of Brunswick. She was a devoted grandmother to grandchildren Sarah Coburn (husband Brendan O'Neil) of Portland; Seth Coburn (wife Helen) of Cumberland; Katherine Suitor of Somerville, Massachusetts; Abigail Suitor of Virginia Beach, Virginia; great granddaughter Emeline O'Neil of Portland. She leaves as well her brother Stanley Hill (wife Sondra) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and their children. She was predeceased by her husband John.

Her family wishes to acknowledge the exceptional care given by the compassionate staff at Foreside Harbor, her caregiver Su Rawcliffe of Aging Excellence; and most recently the unparalleled care and support provided by the staff at The Mooring on Foreside and the Compassus Hospice agency.

A memorial service will be held at State Street Church in Portland at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 23rd. Arrangements are being made by Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland.
